Some days when you’re out the tuna are biting so well they’d hook up on a hotdog if given the chance. And some days they’re so line-shy you swear they’re playing with your emotions. Well we can’t do much to help you with those hotdog days, but for the line-shy days we’ve got just what you need: TUNA TRAPS. For the days the tuna won’t come near anything with a visible leader, Tuna Traps are the way to go.
When Tuna are so line shy as to avoid any bait with a heavy leader, you can use light leaders, or even tie the Traps directly to your main line. The traps are meant to be hidden inside the bait... when a fish takes the bait and starts his run, you set the hook and the tension on the line will pull the cable out of the band. This leaves a 12” length of cable where it’s needed most, with more than enough abrasion resistance needed to land your catch. Now you can use much lighter leaders and end up with more strikes on those line-shy days (for the ultimate set-up, use tuna traps with a fluoro-carbon wind-on leader. You’ll LOVE the results).
Tuna Traps are hooks with a 12” length of cable attached to a welded ring on the other end. The cable is wrapped into a tight coil and held in place on the shank of the hook with a special band. They are specifically designed for use while chunking for tuna, and have proven to be quite effective.
